I think for the most part people try to be honest in their reviews and if they had a very positive or negative experience they are much more likely to take the time to share their experience. I don’t think people are intentionally biased but I do think business owners need to read between the lines to gain the most they can from their reviews.

I’m having trouble squaring it with other research on reviews. Providing an incentive tends to increase the likelihood that the reviewer will give a more positive review. That’s one reason why the Federal Trade Commission requires reviewers who have been incentivized to disclose that they’ve received some compensation for giving the review.
